Reasons for Unexpected Shutdowns or Restarts

Overview

This document consolidates the various reasons one might see an Exinda appliance shutdown or restart itself unexpectedly.

Information

Reason Description
A spike in the connection rate Caused by DDOS attacks or network scans
Kernel Panic A state where some processes have hit a tipping point, causing the device to force a reboot
Huge Policy Set This can cause restraints on the available RAM, causing unexpected shutdowns
Process Failure This does not always cause an unexpected reboot, however, it can be a contributing factor
Old Firmware Using an old version of the firmware that has known issues, or has too much output to the serial console
  • Some of these, such as a sudden spike in connections corresponding to an attack of various kinds (internal or external) are transient conditions and are not systematic.
  • It is a best practice to have the Exinda behind a firewall in order to help mitigate these types of situations.
  • Systematic problems like a kernel panic or process failure can correspond to bugs in the code.

If you are facing any of these issues, please contact Exinda Support for assistance.
