Overview
P2P (Peer to Peer) traffic is generally undesirable. This article will go over the best practices that Exinda provides to control this traffic.
Information
Block P2P
Create a policy for all P2P (Peer to Peer) traffic; choose to Block it in the Action section. This blocks all application traffic in the P2P application group.
Shortcomings of Blocking P2P Traffic
Generally, P2P applications find their way around when they detect a Block. To work-around this, it is recommended to choke P2P rather than blocking it.
Optimize to Choke The Throughput
Instead of choosing Block, choose to Optimize in the Action Drop-down and configure that policy for a very low guaranteed and burst throughput, for example, 1kbps (Kilobits Per Second) to 3kbps. This way, even if this traffic is allowed, it is only given 1kbps guaranteed. Hence it actually cannot do anything.
