Overview
Exinda Alerts are emails sent to the defined system administrator when certain events on the Exinda appliance are triggered. They can be hardware events, software events related to the firmware or even to the policies and virtual circuits that are defined on the appliance.
Hardware alerts are triggered by the hardware daemon on the system for things such as high RAM usage or high CPU utilization. Software events are regarding firmware events, whether the device has rebooted, whether processes have crashed a certain number of times, etc. One of the software alerts is Appliance license will expire soon, that will be emailed seven days before the expiry of any license.
The alert will look like as shown below:
Hostname: [appliance name]
Version: [version number]
build@exos-build-04:unknown
Date: [date of sending]
Uptime: [device uptime]
Description: The following licenses will expire soon.
[license key] [date] [time]
This article discusses what needs to be done in this scenario.
Information
The license expiry alert is an alert that cannot be turned off like others in Configuration > System > Setup, under the 'Alerts' tab. It will happen regardless of the settings put into place. This is in order to ensure that the system administrator knows when the support license (whether it is simple Software Subscription all the way up to a Premium license) will be expiring so they can make plans to renew or upgrade their license.
These alerts are sent out at seven days to expiry and that cannot be changed. On receiving one, follow the steps given below:
- Log in to the Exinda appliance.
- Double check under Configuration > System > Setup, under the 'Licenses' tab, to verify the date of expiry of your license.
- Even if there are multiple licenses on the box (ie, a new one has already been purchased), if the old one is not removed, it will still generate this alert until the old license is removed from the box. So, remove the older one.
If an alert is generated for a license key that has the word 'RESTRICTED' in it, that means that a restricted license (one generated by the Exinda TAC Team for troubleshooting or advanced device usage while dealing with an open support case), which has a life span of seven days when generated, has not been removed from the device after TAC was finished utilizing it. This license can safely be ignored and the administrator can let it expire. It will not expire your current production license or adversely affect the Exinda if it does expire.
Please contact Exinda TAC if assistance is required or immediate removal is requested.
